I am an avid health advocate for our family, as well the HSA Health Committee Chairperson for Washington School. Since April, I have closely monitored the H1N1/swine flu pandemic reports, and the swine flu vaccine, and have spoken to many highly-respected physicians throughout the country to understand the implications of both. With this said, I would like to share some serious concerns with you, our town's Health Officer.
As reported, the swine flu has been a mild virus, that is best prevented with frequent hand-washing, rest and proper hydration. To date, there have been approximately 1,000 reported deaths worldwide; when compared to the 36,000 reported annual seasonal flu deaths in the US alone, the number is miniscule. Considering this, it was surprising to learn that our government has ordered 600 million doses of swine flu vaccine (two shots for every US resident) at costs approaching $6 billion. Additionally, the government reported it is considering mandating the new swine flu vaccine. As you are well aware, vaccines, like all medical procedures, carry risks of injury and death (as indicated on the vaccine package inserts and via the government's vaccine injury tracking database, VAERS). Therefore, it is only ethical for people to have the right to informed vaccine consent/choice. Please watch this 60 Minutes expose on the outcome of the 1976 Swine Flu mandate:

Additionally, proper clinical trials will not be conducted prior to millions of vaccines being injected here and abroad. On a final, important note, I find it unconscionable that our schools may be turned into mass vaccination "clinics." According to Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius, “If you think about vaccinating kids, schools are the logical place." She says if the current trend continues, "… the target may be school-age children as a first priority for vaccination.” (CBS News). In fact, the government has been urging school superintendents across the nation to prepare for this possibility.
I feel very strongly that each of us should absolutely have the right to make informed health decisions for ourselves and our families. No one should be forced to accept a medical procedure, including vaccination, which carries risks of injury and death. And, no one should force our children to be vaccinated in school, without their parents' permission, or require a vaccine for attendance.
